“Time is the school in which we learn, time is the fire in which we burn.” Delmore Schwartz.
Given enough time and fortune, you may be lucky enough to discover deeply important truths about who you are as a person. Some may be fascinating. Others will leave you with such serious psychological scars that you will never see your life the same way again. They will leave you so conflicted by the enormity of the trauma and wisdom gained that you are unable to decide whether it was worth it. Trust me. I know.
I am still recovering from a journey that first started seven long years ago. All it took was a matter of days to unravel my entire life. As I prepare to share with you my Autism Advocacy Series, I want to give the world a glimpse of us because I am not alone. Much of what you are about to read I have recognized as common in communities everywhere. It is time for our voices to be heard. It is time for our needs to be taken seriously.
I would like to thank Ms. Lynne, from AwesomeismMom.com, for this most important opportunity to publish my first article in four years, my sixth overall, and my first exclusively about autism. What you find may be unexpected or shocking. Trauma sharpens the instincts of the individual because the strain triggers a fight-or-flight response needed for survival. I have learned this from bitter firsthand experience.
Everything you are about to read did happen…
