Not only do I respect poetry, I happen to be a poet myself. I really can’t say how accomplished as I haven’t followed the traditional publishing track in life. But I do have a number of poems on Twitter, as well as saved to my iPod for reference.
Once I tinkered with rhyming poetry, I haven’t looked back. It’s as addictive as tattoos (I have two large upper arm tattoos). Even if not rhyming, I respect the discipline and skill to write poetry including the creativity that goes into them.
Poetry is an art form. I only write it when my inspiration is highest, my stress belayed, or to cheer up a certain someone I hope will be in my life before too long. Not many poets, accomplished or not, know that traditional poetry can go further..
I’ve been able to incorporate complex concepts such as guidance for loss and grieving into mine. I used that particular poem to comfort my youngest aunt when she lost her husband two years ago to cancer. He was only in his 60s.
Once you master the art, you can wield it in ways other than simple creativity. That—is when poetry is truly fascinating. When we can push the boundaries to be so much more.
